Authorities said Stacy was operating an all-terrain vehicle on steep terrain while working to defend his property from the fire when the ATV crashed, leaving him pinned beneath the vehicle.

Friends who were with him immediately rushed to help, freeing him from underneath the ATV before beginning lifesaving measures and calling 911. Despite their quick response and the efforts of emergency personnel who arrived at the scene, Stacy succumbed to his injuries.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jason Pollock expressed his condolences while recognizing the determination that led Stacy to remain on his property during the wildfire.

“He was doing what some property owners that are impacted by the Brewer Fire have been doing—everything he could to protect the place he called home, and the memories that go along with his home,” Pollock said.

“Our hearts go out to Stacy’s family, his friends, and everyone affected by this tragic loss. We are also grateful to those who immediately came to his aid and to the firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and deputies who responded under extremely difficult conditions.”
