Koleman John Lind Cause Of Death, Obituary – The University of Jamestown community, along with friends and loved ones across North Dakota and Minnesota, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Koleman Lind, a promising young basketball coach whose life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident. He was 24 years old.

Lind died Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Interstate 94 near Elbow Lake, Minnesota. According to authorities, the crash occurred within a highway construction zone in Erdahl Township, approximately 10 miles east of Elbow Lake. He was one of two drivers who lost their lives in the devastating collision.

News of Koleman’s passing has sent shockwaves through the University of Jamestown athletics family and the many communities where he lived, studied, coached, and inspired others. Though his coaching career was only beginning, those who knew him believe he had already established the qualities of an exceptional leader whose greatest contributions were still ahead of him.

A native of Pine City, Minnesota, Koleman dedicated his life to athletics, education, and mentoring young people. His journey reflected a deep love for the game of basketball and an unwavering commitment to helping others reach their full potential.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Minnesota Morris in 2024. During his first two years at the university, he competed as a member of the men’s basketball team, demonstrating the same work ethic and team-first attitude that would later define his coaching career.

Following his playing days, Koleman transitioned naturally into coaching, serving as the junior varsity boys basketball coach at nearby Hancock High School. Under his leadership, the program enjoyed two winning seasons, but those closest to the team remember that his influence extended far beyond the scoreboard. He was known for encouraging athletes to believe in themselves, work hard, and carry themselves with integrity both on and off the court.

Determined to continue growing as both an educator and coach, Koleman enrolled at the University of Jamestown, where he pursued a master’s degree in Leadership, graduating this spring. At the same time, he joined the university’s women’s basketball program as an assistant coach, quickly becoming a valued member of the coaching staff and a trusted mentor to student-athletes.

Players and colleagues describe Koleman as someone who brought enthusiasm, positivity, and genuine care into every practice, meeting, and game. He possessed an infectious smile and an uplifting personality that made those around him feel welcomed and supported.

Following the tragic news, University of Jamestown Athletic Director Brian Mistro shared a heartfelt message asking the community to keep everyone affected in their prayers.

“Please keep Koleman’s family, our WBB team, Thad, Sarah, Faith and our coaching staff in your thoughts and prayers,” he wrote.

Mistro also reflected on the remarkable promise Koleman displayed as a young coach.

“Koleman was one of those young coaches that you just knew was going places. Always had a smile and never had a bad day. He poured into the people he was with every day.”

Organized by Vivian Lahti of Pine City, the fundraiser reflects the tremendous support surrounding the family during this difficult time.

“The Linds are active members in the community, and any funds donated would be an incredible help during this difficult time,” the organizer shared.
